01Natural portrait beside a tall north-facing window
Position. Window 90 degrees camera left, subject 1 m away.
Result. A soft cheek highlight with enough shadow to keep the face dimensional.
Variant. Move the subject 30 cm toward the glass for more contrast; add white card camera right for a gentler fill.
02Seated portrait with controlled triangular cheek light
Position. 90 cm softbox high camera left, angled 35 degrees down.
Result. A calm portrait with shaped shadow and a small triangle of light on the far cheek.
Variant. Raise the source for deeper eye sockets; bring a silver reflector close for a cleaner commercial finish.
03Fast candid coverage in a low-lit room
Position. Speedlight aimed at white wall 2 m camera left, TTL starting point.
Result. Readable faces while the room keeps its warm ambient colour and motion.
Variant. Use manual flash for consistency once the distance is stable; turn toward the ceiling for a softer top light.
04Layered landscape with foreground texture and a distant horizon
Position. Large natural sky as source, tripod low behind foreground texture.
Result. A quiet frame with a tactile near layer, legible middle distance and open sky.
Variant. Lower the tripod for more foreground; wait for a break in cloud to separate the far ridge.
05Small product or craft detail with a controlled shadow
Position. Window camera left, white card 30 cm camera right.
Result. Texture remains visible while the side shadow gives the object a sense of weight.
Variant. Pull the card farther away for stronger shape; add black card opposite for a deeper edge.
06Environmental portrait for two people in a bright doorway
Position. Open doorway behind camera, shaded wall behind subjects.
Result. Even faces and a little environmental context without the doorway becoming a blown rectangle.
Variant. Turn subjects 20 degrees toward the opening; expose for the faces and let the outside fall bright.
07Performance portrait with a small soft source
Position. Small soft source low camera right, stage light retained as rim.
Result. A face that stays present while the stage colour and direction remain part of the scene.
Variant. Reduce fill for a more dramatic profile; move farther back and use 135mm for a compressed stage layer.
08Quiet editorial portrait of a photographer reviewing work
Position. Warm desk lamp behind and camera left, monitor fill kept low.
Result. A working atmosphere with visible hands, paper and screen glow without a staged smile.
Variant. Turn off the monitor for a paper-first frame; raise ISO instead of overpowering the room with flash.
